Deepfake Videos and Why Verification Matters 

Not long ago, if you saw a video of someone speaking, then you trusted it was real. That is no longer a safe assumption.

Artificial intelligence now allows criminals to create highly realistic deepfake videos — fake videos that convincingly show real people saying or doing things that never actually happened. These are not low-quality internet pranks. They are sophisticated social engineering tools used to commit fraud, spread misinformation, and pressure employees into making costly mistakes. 

This threat is not theoretical. It is already impacting organizations worldwide, because well-produced deepfakes are extremely difficult to identify with the naked eye.

A deepfake is an AI-generated or AI-manipulated video that makes someone appear to say or do something that they never actually did. Cyber-criminals use publicly available photos, videos, and voice recordings to train AI systems that replicate facial expressions, speech patterns, and tone. 

If someone has appeared in: 

  • Company webinars 
  • Social media videos 
  • Conference recordings 
  • Interviews 

There may already be enough public content available to replicate your likeness or voice with alarming accuracy. When you post content online, it’s important to stay aware of who can see it and what they might do.

Deepfake-enabled fraud is closely tied to Business Email Compromise (BEC) and impersonation attacks. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Business Email Compromise caused over $2.9B in reported losses in 2023 alone.

While not all of those cases involved deepfake video, attackers are increasingly adding AI-generated audio and video to make impersonation attempts more convincing. The more realistic the message appears, the more likely someone is to comply without hesitation. 

One convincing request can result in six- or seven-figure losses within minutes. 

Threat actors increasingly use deepfakes to scam employees into giving out money or confidential information. Here’s what that might look like:

  • Financial Fraud: An employee in accounting receives a video message that appears to be from the CFO requesting an urgent wire transfer. The face matches, the voice matches, and the urgency feels authentic. Without a verification process, funds can leave the organization before anyone realizes the request was fraudulent!
  • Executive Impersonation: Attackers may create fake video calls or recorded messages pretending to be leadership, using smart technology to accurately mimic likenesses. Visual confirmation lowers your skepticism and increases the pressure to act quickly. 
  • Reputation Damage: A fabricated video of an executive making inappropriate or controversial statements can spread rapidly online, damaging trust before they can clarify the truth.

Most people believe they can detect manipulated media, but research shows that humans struggle to consistently distinguish real content from AI-generated media, especially as the technology improves. Confidence in spotting a fake does not equal accuracy!

Although deepfake technology continues to improve, some potential red flags include: 

  • Slightly unnatural facial movements 
  • Audio that feels subtly out of sync 
  • Unusual blinking patterns 
  • Odd phrasing or tone inconsistent with the individual 
  • Sudden urgency tied to financial or sensitive requests 
  • Pressure to bypass standard procedures 

The absence of any visible flaws does not mean that the message holds any real legitimacy. Relying on visual judgment alone cannot protect your private data!

Verification removes emotion and urgency from the equation. If you receive a video, voice message, or live call requesting: 

  • A wire transfer 
  • Payroll changes 
  • Sensitive company data 
  • Password resets 
  • Gift card purchases 
  • Policy exceptions 

Pause before you act!

Confirm the request using a separate, trusted communication method. For example: 

  • Call the individual using a number already stored in your contacts. 
  • If possible, confirm with them in person.
  • Use your official internal communication platform. 
  • Follow established financial approval workflows. 

Never rely solely on the same channel where the request originated, because you don’t know who really waits behind the screen.

Firewalls and antivirus software cannot prevent a fraudulent payment if someone voluntarily approves it. Deepfake attacks succeed when urgency overrides process and authority is assumed rather than verified. 

Security tools are important, but verification procedures are critical. 

  1. Treat urgent financial or sensitive requests with healthy skepticism. 
  1. Follow established approval workflows without exception. 
  1. Verify requests through a separate communication channel. 
  1. Report suspicious communications immediately, even if you are unsure. 
  1. Remember that realism does not equal legitimacy. 

When deepfakes become more convincing, we need to become more cautious and aware in response.

Deepfake technology will continue to improve. The videos will become more convincing, and voices will become nearly indistinguishable from the real person. 

Seeing is no longer believing, and verification is not distrust. It helps protect your confidential data. 

One unverified request can cause significant financial and reputational damage. Taking a few extra minutes to confirm authenticity can prevent months or even years of recovery.
